I co-founded the Writing Squad in 2001. We started off as a project recruiting fifteen writers aged 16-21 every two years in Yorkshire, we are now part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio recruiting thirty writers from across the north of England.
We provide workshops, one to one support and professional investment. After our core two year programme, we continue to offer our grads support and projects to take part in. While we started off as a writer development programme, we now see ourselves as much more of a community of artists.
We are still in contact one way or another with around 152 of the 211 writers we have worked with over the years, 35 now earn their living in the writing or cultural sector and about another 50 are beginning to make a name for themselves as published, performed or produced writers and activists. Meet some of them here.
